Brokenstraw (Greek) Sauce

Brokenstraw (Greek) Sauce

Sauce Is Boss

If you’ve never tried hot dog sauce you’re missing out.

Call it what you will- Greek sauce, Johnnys sauce, Coney Island Sauce, or as we like to call it Brokenstraw Sauce.

Add it to your choice of dog, smother your fries, or load up your burger. Either way you won’t regret it. The rounded out topping has a little heat, a little tang and a whole lot of yum.

It is easy to make, quick to whip up and keeps well in the fridge, we have also kept leftovers in the freezer for a quick meal. It is so delicious, I asked for it for my birthday meal last year! My favorite way to enjoy this recipe is on a hotdog or one of Wes’s famous smash burgers. Add a little chopped onion and stoneground mustard and try not to eat the whole pot!

Ingredients
  • Water- 6 Cups
  • Tomato Soup- 1 (8oz) can
  • Hotdogs- 8oz (we prefer Nathans all beef)
  • Black Pepper- 2 tsp
  • Paprika- 1 tbs
  • Chili Powder- 1 tbs
  • White Vinegar- 1/4 cup
  • Sea Salt- 1 tsp
  • Onion Powder- 1/2 tsp
  • White Pepper- 1/4 tsp
  • Oregano- 1/2 tsp
  • Cinnamon- 1/2 tsp
  • Dried Thyme Leaves- 1/4 tsp
  • Crushed Red Pepper Flakes- 1 tsp
  • Plain Bread Crumbs- Optional, up to 1/2 cup
Directions
  • Step 1 Start by pulsing the hotdogs in a food processor until they look like a fine crumb, or similar to cooked ground beef.
  • Step 2 Add hotdogs to a heavy bottomed pot with all other ingredients, except for the bread crumbs.
  • Step 3 Bring contents of the pot to a boil, then turn down to a simmer and allow to reduce for 45 minutes.
  • Step 4 After the sauce has thickened slightly, add bread crumbs starting with 1/4 cup until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Step 5 It is now ready to serve! We like to enjoy on hotdogs or hamburgers with some chopped onion, and maybe a bit of mustard. Or on french fries with shredded cheddar cheese. Enjoy!
